The next thing: Geotagging photos

As more people take pictures on digital cameras, there’s a growing interest in making sure that those pictures are geotagged — or tagged by the exact location where the photo was taken. When pictures contain location information, they could be easier to sort and find in personal photo software like iPhoto or in an online memories library like iMemories Online.

Right now, only a small fraction of photos contain any information about where they were taken. Touble is, if you want to add location information to pictures today, it’s a fairly tedious process — manually annotating the pictures after they’ve been uploaded to a computer or an online memories sharing site. With new technology, that process looks to be a thing of the past.

Some high-end cameras come equipped with a Global Positioning System (GPS) chip that captures the location information. Others use local Wi-Fi routers. Neither is capable of geotagging everywhere — as GPS technology has satellite “line of sight” limitations and Wi-Fi is limited to available hot-spots. Ultimately, the best geotagging results will come from a combination of services that use a variety of location-tracking technologies.

I love it when new technology advances the ease and enjoyment of capturing and sharing memories. These innovations will eventually become as commonplace on new digital cameras and camcorders as zoom lenses.
