Say ‘cheese’: New consumer tech measuring smiles

Looks like consumer technology companies are focused on making digital video camcorders and digital cameras more intelligent, and more useful – as it relates to people’s smiles.
Sony Corp. has a Smile Shutter function for its digital cameras which automatically clicks the shutter when people in the image break into a smile. Whenever Face Detection finds a face, the unique new Smile Shutter mode can spot a smile. Simply activate Smile Shutter, and the camera takes a picture — automatically! You can capture joyous moments that used to get away.
Recently, new technology innovation from Omron Corp measures the breadth of a smile. The software technology scans a video image to detect faces. It can find up to 100 faces in an image. Then analyzes the curves of the lips, eye movement and other facial characteristics to decide how much a person is smiling using data collected from a million people and their smiles.
Home movies (and photos) are just going to be amazing going forward as this advanced technology continues to evolve. First, consumers got to enjoy and experience capturing memories with high definition digital camcorders, making the visual and sound quality of home movies truly unbelievable — quality that was traditionally reserved for the motion picture film industry. And now, with smile detection technology, consumers are going to be able to capture more, and find the best personal moments — to remember.

This technology is going to be very useful in catching those card counters in Vegas, like in the movie “21″!
