Study: Consumers Want Control of the When, Why, Where of their Content

There’s a new IBM survey out that looks at consumer behavior and preferences in a digital world. One of the amazing facts from the survey is that TV usage is decreasing – an important trend.
Some of the key stats:
• 6 or more hours spent on the Internet daily: 19% of respondents
• 6 or more hours spent watching TV daily: 8%
• 1-4 hours spent on the Internet daily: 60%
• 1-4 hours spent watching TV daily: 66%
We love to see this at iMemories, because we’re part of the new media culture. As the expert at IBM, Saul Berman, said, “The Internet is becoming consumers’ primary entertainment source. The TV is increasingly taking a back seat to the cell phone and the personal computer among consumers age 18-34.” The Internet accessibility surpasses that of television, even with DVR capabilities. Consumers can watch what they want when they want and anywhere they want.
Other interesting stats:
• 67% have watched or want to watch online video
• 26% have contributed to a social networking site
• 7% have a subscription to video content from their mobile phones
The folks at IBM predict that more and more people will watch video on the go, not just at home. This is definitely a trend and not an anomaly. A similar survey by IBM in 2005 found that “consumers will be in complete control of what content they want to watch, when and where.” The Internet and even mobile devices will be the future of entertainment – in fact, looks as if the future is already here.
