National (& Personal) History & Memories Digitized

The New York Times released a thought provoking article over the weekend entitled “History, Digitized.”. I highly recommend reading it.

This captures the essence of what the US (and World) faces today. 99% of all relevant historical material, whether it be personal memorabilia (home movies & pictures) or historical artifacts (important films, video tapes, pictures, books, documents) are degrading faster than anyone can finance or put forth the effort to “digitize” them (or said another way, the process of converting a physical asset to a digital asset — a computer file that will no longer degrade over time, and can be copied and shared more affordably to the masses online or through any digital vehicle).

I agree this is a tough endeavor and a time consuming and expensive assignment. But, one that can’t be ignored. With all of the digital technology available, and experts who know how to execute digital remastering, a way must be found to start this process — for all who care about the memories of the past.
